Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction began its activity as a "Construction" faculty in Baku State University in 1920, as an independent Construction Institute in 1930-34 and as a "Construction" faculty in  the Azerbaijan Industry Institute from 1934. In 1951 in connection with the establishment of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute, the "Construction" faculty was moved to that institution. In 1975 Azerbaijan Civil Engineering Institute was established by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic. Since1992 the Institute has become the University. In 2000 this higher educational establishment was renamed into Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction by the decree of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic, Heydar Aliyev.

The history of the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction which has invaluable merits in preparation of engineers, began from 20 years of the last century. In May, 1920 under the order of the national Commissariat on Education the commission for establishment of the Baku Polytechnical Institute was created. As a result of commission's activity the decree about the establishment of the Baku Polytechnical Institute was signed by N.Narimanov on November 16, 1920. Engineering – construction faculty became one of the basic faculties of institute the same year. From the moment of creation engineering –  construction  faculty, the process of preparation of experts in the field of architecture, transport, hydraulic engineering has begun.

In 1920,  110 students were educated at this faculty who had been transferred here from technical schools. The number of students of this faculty grew every year . The quantity of students totaled in 1921 – 170, 1922 – 216, 1923 – 267, 1925 – 454 people. The highly skilled teachers from other cities of the Soviet Union were invited and as the result of it  the number of teachers and professors of the institute grew.

Under the personal initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev, for the purpose of professional training in other cities of the republic, the Ministerial council of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic issued the order on opening Azerbaijan Engineering – Construction institute in 1975. According to this order on the basis of 4 faculties and several specialized chairs of the Azerbaijan Polytechnical  Institute named after Chingiz  Ildrym,  the Azerbaijan Construction Institute was generated and began its independent activity. The history of the university is closely connected with a name of national leader Heydar Aliyev. The next years the activity of the university has always been surrounded by constant care of this great person. In 1976, 1981 the national leader visited university and thanks to his advice and recommendations the educational institution developed and  today has reached considerable successes.

In 1991 the library having fund more than 45 thousand of copies of books began its activity there. The same year 12 thousand readers used fund of the library which consisted of 4 departments, 2 sections and 5 branches, the museum of history of the University and the exhibition salon were created later. All of it has played a great  role in increasing of level of knowledge, the organizations of free pastime of students, and also for their education in the spirit of patriotism.

On July, 13th, 2000 under the order of the president of the Azerbaijan Republic  Heydar Aliyev our University was renamed into the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction.

Within these years the university has been  closely connected with occurring in the republic social – economic development and has played an important role in formation and development of the sciences of architecture and construction.
